Overview
When paper gets wet and then dries on its own, the water leaves as liquid. Fibres swell and contract unevenly, pages ripple and stick, and soluble inks migrate. The result is usually unrecoverable, and it happens fast.
Freeze-drying takes a different route. Material is frozen first, which stops deterioration and ink migration immediately, then placed under vacuum so the ice converts straight to vapour without passing through a liquid stage. Pages keep their shape and ink stays where it belongs. It's the method libraries and national archives use to recover collections after a flood.
Freezing stops the clock. Even if restoration takes weeks, freezing within the first days is what makes it possible at all.

Do not try to separate wet pages — that's when tearing happens. Do not set documents out in the Arizona sun to dry. If you can, put affected paper and photographs in a domestic freezer immediately, in loosely closed bags. Freezing at home buys us the time we need, and it costs you nothing.
