Where smoke settles
after everything looks clean.

Ductwork and upholstery hold soot and odor long after visible damage is gone. Skipping them is the most common reason a restored home still smells wrong.

Overview

When a fire burns, the HVAC system distributes smoke through the whole house — including rooms the fire never reached. Soot settles inside the ducts and stays there. Turn the system on months later and it redistributes through every vent.

Upholstery is the same problem in a different form. Foam and fabric absorb smoke deeply, and surface cleaning a sofa doesn't reach what's inside the cushion. Both are routinely skipped, and both are why a house that looks finished still doesn't smell finished.

Ductwork

Supply and return runs, registers, and the air handler. Cleaning some and not others just reseeds the system.

Upholstered furniture

Treated by fabric type and construction, with attention to the foam underneath rather than only the surface.

Rugs and textiles

Area rugs, drapery, and soft furnishings, cleaned in place or taken with the pack-out.

Detail

Worth doing even when the fire was small.

A contained kitchen fire that never spread will still have pushed smoke through the return air system. Homeowners often decline duct cleaning because visible damage was limited, then spend the next year unable to work out where the smell is coming from. If the HVAC was running during the event, it moved smoke, and the ducts should be inspected.

Common questions

Questions we get asked.

How do I know if my ducts need cleaning after a fire?

If the HVAC system was running during or shortly after the fire, assume smoke entered it. An inspection is quick and settles the question.

Can upholstered furniture be saved after smoke damage?

Frequently, yes. Whether it's worth restoring depends on the value of the piece and how deeply the foam absorbed. We give you an honest read rather than an automatic recommendation either way.
